Unity in Diversity: Sharing Ramadan Fasting Experience at Shieldpay
In a world where diversity and inclusion are increasingly recognised as essential pillars of organisational success, companies are continually seeking ways to foster understanding and solidarity among their employees. At Shieldpay, we are taking this beyond simply recognising the merits of celebrating diversity by actively immersing ourselves in the lives of our people. This month, many of our people joined our Muslim colleagues in observing Ramadan through a series of company-wide fasts.
The initiative was spearheaded by Zaib Mehmood, a dedicated member of our IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equality, and Accessibility) community. Zaib's thoughtful invitation encouraged the broader business to partake in some daily fasts during Ramadan; the holiest month in the Islamic calendar.
As I reflect on this experience, I am humbled by the commitment and sacrifice of our Muslim colleagues and all Muslims throughout the month of Ramadan. Fasting from dawn to dusk is not merely an act of abstaining from food and drink but a profound spiritual journey marked by self-discipline, reflection, and empathy.
Participating in the fast alongside my colleagues was an eye-opening experience. It gave me the opportunity to learn more about Ramadan, its significance, and the traditions. Moreover, it has provided a platform for meaningful engagement with individuals whom I may not typically interact with on a regular basis at Shieldpay.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) are more than just buzzwords; they are fundamental values that should be ingrained in the fabric of every organisation. As I was fasting alongside my colleagues, I was reminded that true diversity goes beyond surface-level representation—it requires a genuine commitment to understanding, respect, and solidarity.
This experience serves as a testament to the strides we are making in living out our DE&I values at Shieldpay. It reinforces the importance of fostering an inclusive culture where every individual feels valued, respected, and empowered to bring their authentic selves to work. How can we possibly show up in the world and be relevant when we’re not willing to truly appreciate all that makes us different and diverse.
I’m proud of my fellow Shieldpay'ers who embraced this initiative wholeheartedly, especially those who were embarking on their first-ever fasting experience. Special thanks to my fasting buddy, Samera, for sharing this journey with me, and for looking after me for the day.
As Ramadan concludes on Friday 5th April, I will once again join our colleagues for the final fast in continuation of celebrating the richness of people and diversity. May this experience serve as a catalyst for continued dialogue, understanding, and collaboration within our workplace and beyond. Together, we can create a world where diversity is not only embraced but celebrated.
