The opportunity
As a Senior DevOps Engineer at Shieldpay you will play a critical role in designing, implementing and maintaining our infrastructure to support our SDLC and Customer Operations. You will be responsible for designing, automating, and scaling our cross-cloud infrastructure across AWS, GCP, and Cloudflare. You will bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the table, contributing significantly by ensuring the successful execution of DevOps projects.
Sitting within our Engineering team, you will drive platform resilience through monitoring, disaster recovery and high availability patterns. You will play a critical role in futureproofing Shieldpay’s infrastructure by adapting modern, event-driven, and ledger-based patterns to promote scalability and cut costs. This is a critical role that will enable engineers to adopt best practices in infrastructure, observability and automation.
What you’ll be doing
- Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Build and maintain AWS and GCP infrastructure, using Pulumi and AWS CDK to automate processes ensuring reproducibility and auditability.
- CI/CD Ownership: You will be responsible for evolving our GitHub Actions / AWS CodePipeline pipelines for multi-cloud deployments including secrets management, automated testing, and approval workflows. You are a champion of Continuous Improvement, identifying target areas and implementing strategies to achieve this.
- Observability and Reliability: you will implement real-time monitoring, alerting, and dashboards (Grafana, Datadog, GCP Looker) to ensure uptime and proactively address incidents.
- Security and Governance: Harden environments with Cloudflare, AWS WAF, IAM Identity Centre and tagging strategies to meet compliance obligations.
- Cross-cloud Automation: Work on complex integration projects (e.g. Golden AMI pipelines, ledger event streams, centralised EventBus).
- Collaboration and Mentorship: Partner with engineers to improve delivery velocity and resilience coaching the team in DevOps principles.
- Complex Problem Solving: Devise innovative solutions that address the issue at hand and enhance the agility and effectiveness of our solutions.
- Knowledge Sharing: You will share expertise and knowledge through technical documentation and presentations to the broader engineering team.
What we're looking for in you
- Demonstrable Experience: You have previously worked in a DevOPs role, ideally within a regulated industry, even better if this is in payments, or the broader Fintech space.
- Strong technical expertise: Evidenced experience managing production workload on AWS (ECS, Lambda, CloudFront, S3, RDS, RouteS3) and GCP (BigQuery, VPC, IAM)
- Strong IAC skills: Proven proficiency with Pulumi, AWS CDK, or similar modern IaC frameworks.
- Automation mindset: Comfortable designing CI/CD pipelines (Github Actions preferred) that balance speed, safety, and compliance.
- Security Focus: Previous experience implementing WAFs, mTLS, IAM Governance, and secrets management in a commercial environment.
- Observability and cost-awareness: Strong experience with Grafana (or similar), including alerting, dashboarding, and cost optimisation.
- Collaboration and Communication: Excellent written and spoken English; able to translate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and influence at all levels.
- Incident Management: You have lead incident response and the post-mortem process.
- Adaptability and ownership: You thrive in a multi-cloud, event-driven environment, comfortable balancing short-term delivery with long-term architectural vision.
- Continuous Learning: You strive to learn and adapt to new technologies within the DevOps landscape.
